Objectives

The objectives of the FCAW for Teachers Programme are:

  1. To gain governments’ support for animal welfare education.

  2. To promote animal welfare education programmes which take into account the appropriate:
    • Developmental stages of children
    • Animal welfare issues and themes placed in the right subject
    • Teaching and learning methodologies,
    • National and/or regional educational provision, opportunities and constraints.
  1. To provide professional support for teachers to implement animal welfare activities.

  2. To provide those who wish to include animal welfare education within their educational system with a global picture of how such an initiative is being tackled internationally. Existing good practice and resources from other countries can be adapted if required.

  3. To assist the growth of knowledge of animal welfare and animal welfare education by providing an opportunity to share and disseminate new knowledge and existing good practice.

Varied Approach to FCAW

There are four key components that support the FCAW programme:

  1. Partnerships and Networking:
    Working with governments, teachers, teacher training providers, education institutes, member societies and other NGO’s to form a network of groups and individuals dedicated to getting animal welfare education into schools around the world.
  1. Research and Development:
    Research into education systems in different countries to find were animal welfare education fits into curricula
       
      • Contributing to existing academic research and encouraging further research in the field of animal welfare education
      • Development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of pilot projects and of fully implemented animal welfare education programmes
      • Establishing educationally sound methodologies and guidelines
      • Development of new materials or adaptation of existing high quality resources
  1. Professional Support
      • In-service training for teachers and practitioners (already working in classrooms)
      • Initial teacher training and education for students (at college/university level)
  1. Monitoring and Evaluation
    Developing and supporting sound methodologies to assess the effectiveness of FCAW programmes.
